We are Louise and Merl, Swedish sisters who have lived in the UK since we were little. We’ve always loved making things, and from a young age were taught to be resourceful, and to love and respect our environment.

A quarter of a tonne of single-use waste plastic went into these 19 tabletops - equivalent to around 10,000 bags for life! The waste came from local businesses in Brighton & Hove, including packaging from the bar industry, clothing retailers, and carpet and fabric shops.

We revisited @thetownhousealresford a few weeks ago for a quick spruce up after 3 years of heavy cafe & restaurant use. They’ve held up incredibly well, developing the same kind of patina that you would expect from a natural material like wood. We fixed some air pockets that had been there from the start (which we didn’t know how to fix at the time!), and tidied a few scuffed edges.

When it’s time - probably in another few years - we’ll come back and do a full restoration service, sanding the tops back and polishing them up to be good as new.

The beauty in this material is that we can repeat this restoration for decades to come, or even remelt the tabletops to be turned into something completely new!

Here's a little video of us melting down some colour tests and mixing the colour smooth - did not expect them to go this gorgeous aubergine colour!

It's been about a year now since we got our roll mills, and it's safe to say that these guys have saved our arms and backs from a lot of unnecessary manual labour! We used to colour mix all of our plastic by hand, and mixing anything between 1 - 20kg would take literally all day, because each portion had to be kneaded in multiple rounds with waiting for it to remelt in between. Now, we can mix up to around 1.5kg in minutes 🥲 plus, it's fun, and very, very satisfying.

There are so many creative, time consuming stages of our process that need to be done by hand (that we would never want a machine to do for us) so it's been life changing to have help with this laborious part of the process. It's actually put the fun back into creating new colour recipes, as it's so quick to tweak them, and we're not exhausting ourselves in the process.

ANGELA'S OF MARGATE TABLETOPS

Our very first tabletop project back in 2017 was for the opening of this brilliant sustainable seafood restaurant over in the seaside town of Margate, Kent, founded by Lee & Charlotte, and head chef Rob.

This project was special in many ways: not just because these were the first tabletops we ever made, but this was also when I, Louise, first roped my sister Merl into the strange world of plastic recycling. I needed a lot of help to tackle the 210kg of waste plastic for this project, and even though we had always wanted to work together somehow, this was the first time Merl took her hand to working with the plastic, and, luckily, she absolutely loved it. Just a few months later she quit her job and we formed Weez & Merl!

After nearly 8 years years of use, Lee messaged us and said the tables could do with a refurb. Even though they were beautiful, there were a lot of things we didn't know when we made them all those years ago, so there were airpockets and cracks that needed filling - actually, a complete resurfacing was needed - it really was a massive challenge to fix them. But after a lot of hard work, the tables have now entered into their second phase of life and are back in their home at Angela's looking better than ever.

Here are a few pics we took of the tables when we went over to Margate this weekend. This was the first time we've visited, and we were treated to the most delicious, local, sustainable sea food we have ever eaten, both at Angela's, and their sister small-plates seafood bar Dory's round the corner. If you can go, we could not recommend them highly enough! We also got to stay in Angela's gorgeous rooms above the restaurant, which are kitted out with eco-concious materials top-to-toe and made the whole trip even more special.

We definitely won't wait another 8 years for our next visit to Margate!! Thank you so much to Lee & Charlotte and their fab teams at @angelas_of_margate and @dorys_of_margate for a fantastic few days. And more importantly, thank you for taking a chance on recycled plastic all those years ago!
